ASUS has introduced the ROG Ally X, the latest iteration in its handheld gaming PC lineup. Announced last month, the ROG Ally X is not a direct successor to last year’s ROG Ally but offers significant improvements in performance, RAM, battery life, and design.

ASUS ROG Ally X: Design, Specs, and Features

The ASUS ROG Ally is already renowned as one of the top gaming handhelds on the market, and the ROG Ally X elevates this reputation with substantial enhancements, making it feel like a genuine successor.

Design and Features:

  • AMD Ryzen Z1 APU: Retains the same powerful processor as the original model.
  • Display: Features a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS LCD Display.
  • Memory: Upgraded to 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM running at 7500 MT/s in dual-channel mode.
  • Storage: Includes 1TB of PCIe NVMe SSD storage, up from 512GB in the original model. The use of M.2 2280 size drives, as opposed to the 2242-size in the original Ally, simplifies and reduces the cost of storage upgrades.
  • Ports: Keeps most of the original ports but replaces the XG Mobile eGPU connector with two USB-C ports, including a high-speed USB4 port that supports eGPUs, adding an extra USB port for peripherals.

Battery and Cooling:

  • Battery: Features a significantly larger 80Wh battery, potentially doubling the battery life compared to the original 40Wh model.
  • Cooling System: Redesigned cooling system with slimmer, more efficient fans to address overheating, especially during intense gameplay. The repositioned microSD card slot resolves previous heat-related issues.

Ergonomics and Usability:

  • Design Enhancements: Smoother design with softer curves and deeper grips for comfort during long gaming sessions. Improved buttons and joysticks for easier use.
  • Durability: Sturdier joysticks with better feedback, a non-sticky D-pad, and a recessed fingerprint sensor for easier location. Smaller back buttons reduce accidental presses.

Pricing and Availability

The ROG Ally X is available for pre-order in select countries for $799 (approximately Rs 66,000). It comes in black and includes a bonus 3-month Xbox Game Pass subscription. The official release date is July 22nd. Pricing and availability for India are yet to be announced.
