An indie adventure like no other is about to change how you think about gameplay. Particle Hearts, developed by Los Angeles-based Underwater Fire and published by First Break Labs, is set to release on August 25 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. But the latest exclusive preview has just given us a glimpse into its stunningly surreal world, and it looks like a masterpiece in the making.
This is not just another atmospheric exploration game. In Particle Hearts, the world is literally made of visible particles. But instead of being a design gimmick, these particles are at the very core of how the game plays. You slowly gain abilities that allow you to manipulate the environment by becoming one with it. The first ability you unlock is called Burst, and it completely flips the way you interact with space.
Using Burst, your character can dissolve into particles and pass through barriers, glide mid-air, or slip between moving platforms. It is not just a flashy effect but a full-blown mechanic that changes how you solve puzzles and explore. In the gameplay preview narrated by studio founder Jess Feidt, you see this ability in action as the protagonist escapes a wall of thorns by turning into vapor and flows into a shimmering gate called the Figment Gate. These gates take you to new, strange puzzle worlds and act as reality-bending portals similar to the Shrines in Zelda.
The level design pushes you to get creative. In one segment, you fall through a grate by bursting downward, learning that the game does not just let you phase through walls but also through floors. The developers have built the world around these mechanics, ensuring every level feels like a test of imagination more than just reflex.
Jess Feidt, a former Call of Duty developer who left Treyarch to build Underwater Fire, explains that the game is designed to feel surreal but emotionally grounded. The protagonist is mysterious and horned, the art style is dreamy, and the music blends calm with unease. Yet at its heart, Particle Hearts is about mastering new abilities to bend the rules of the world around you.
A playable demo was part of Steam Next Fest and is still available to try. The early buzz has been strong, with many praising the game’s unique concept and the emotional quiet of its puzzles. Unlike most indie platformers that lean too much on nostalgia, this one feels like it is charting new territory with every frame.
Particle Hearts launches on August 25, and if the preview is any indication, it could be one of the most original games of the year. You are not just controlling a character. You are becoming the world.
