Sean Smith, formerly Head of Strategy and Business Operations for Activision Blizzard Esports, has been promoted to CEO of mobile-focused esports organization Tribe Gaming. This leadership change sees the founder, Patrick Carney, moving into the role of Chief Strategy Officer.

Smith, who joined Tribe Gaming in 2023 as COO, brings extensive experience from his tenure at NBA teams Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic, and his four-plus years at Activision Blizzard’s esports division.

Smith expressed gratitude and excitement about his new role, saying: "I am both humbled and honored to have been entrusted with the role of CEO, leading this incredible team on our exciting journey forward."

Tribe Gaming, founded in 2017 by Patrick Carney (known as ‘Chief Pat’) and Jon Sakoucky, focuses on mobile esports titles like Brawl Stars, Call of Duty: Mobile, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans. The organization has established significant partnerships with Samsung Electronics America and AT&T. Earlier this year, Tribe and AT&T transformed an RV into a mobile gaming hub, the Tribe Mobile Club House, for content creators and fans.

Carney, now Chief Strategy Officer, will focus on strategic initiatives and investor relations while remaining on the leadership team and Board of Directors. He praised Smith's leadership: “Since joining Tribe late last year, Sean has proven to be an incredible leader and steward of the business.”
