Release Date and Platforms

Pokémon Legends Z-A is set to release worldwide on October 16, 2025. It will launch on both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 version will be released as an Enhanced Edition, featuring visual and performance upgrades. Nintendo confirmed this during its March 2025 Direct.

Setting: Lumiose City Reimagined

The game takes place entirely within Lumiose City, the bustling metropolis first introduced in Pokémon X and Y. In this new story, Lumiose is being redeveloped into a city for both trainers and Pokémon. You’ll live at Hotel Z and serve as a member of Team MZ, tackling threats across designated “Wild Zones.”

During the day, players will explore these zones to catch and battle Pokémon. At night, the Z-A Royale system takes over, where trainers face off in ranked battles to progress the story. Side quests, detective missions, and scientific research projects expand the city’s life, ensuring plenty to do outside of battles.

Gameplay: Real-Time Battles

Breaking from tradition, Z-A abandons the familiar turn-based system. Instead, battles now play out in real time, with dodges, cooldowns, and lock-on mechanics. This creates a faster, more dynamic combat experience that rewards strategy and timing.

Key mechanics include dodging and rolling to avoid attacks, cooldown-based moves to prevent spamming, real-time swapping to take advantage of team synergies, and rank progression (Z to A) tied to competitive zones, which inspired the game’s title.

Mega Evolutions Return

After years away, Mega Evolutions are back. Introduced originally in Pokémon X and Y, they allow select Pokémon to unleash hidden energy when a trainer’s Key Stone resonates with their Mega Stone. Confirmed Mega Evolutions include Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Dragonite, Mega Lucario, Mega Absol, Mega Altaria, Mega Ampharos, Mega Hawlucha, Mega Sableye, Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Gardevoir, and Mega Victreebel.

Leaks suggest up to 27 new Mega Evolutions could debut, potentially bringing the total to 75.

Starters

Players will choose between three familiar starters:

  • Chikorita (Grass, Gen II) → Bayleef → Meganium

  • Totodile (Water, Gen II) → Croconaw → Feraligatr

  • Tepig (Fire, Gen V) → Pignite → Emboar

Each brings a unique personality and nostalgic ties to past generations.

Legendary Pokémon: Zygarde

The confirmed legendary for Z-A is Zygarde, the Dragon/Ground-type introduced in Generation VI. Made up of “Cores” and “Cells,” Zygarde changes form depending on its composition. Its deep connection to Lumiose’s redevelopment and the mysterious corporation Quasartico Inc. suggests it will play a central role in the storyline.

Pre-Orders and Special Editions

Pre-orders went live on June 5, 2025. Standard Edition (Switch) is priced at $59.99 / £49.99, while the Enhanced Edition (Switch 2) is $69.99 / £58.99. Bundle options include a Partner Pokémon Figurine set with the starters, and Mega Evolution bundles featuring Mega Charizard X/Y figurines and starter pins. A Switch 2 console bundle, priced at $499.99, will also be available in the UK from July 23, 2025, with US details still pending.

Final Thoughts

Pokémon Legends Z-A is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious entries in the franchise. With real-time battles, Mega Evolutions, a city-based setting, and strong competitive features, it feels like the next big leap for the series.
