Riot Games has confirmed that the upcoming League of Legends APAC League will take place in Taipei, Taiwan. This new league will combine teams from Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, Japan, Oceania, and the rest of Southeast Asia, replacing the existing regional leagues.
Historical Significance of Taipei
Taipei is a city with a rich history in League of Legends esports. The Taipei Assassins won the second League of Legends World Championship, and the region has produced notable teams like the Flash Wolves, known for their international competitiveness.
Changes in League Structure
The formation of the APAC League comes as part of Riot Games' broader strategy to streamline their esports ecosystem. This change is designed to ensure better revenue distribution by reducing the number of tier-one teams and increasing revenue per team.
League Composition and Selection Process
The APAC League will feature eight teams, divided into partnered and guest slots. Partnered slots will be permanent, with four partner teams selected through a rigorous process. Guest slots will be open to promotion and relegation at the end of each season.
Qualification and Invitations
Two league spots will be awarded based on competitive performance: one through the PCS playoffs and one through the VCS playoffs. The highest-placing non-partnered team in each tournament will earn these spots. Additionally, the final two spots will be allocated to invited teams to ensure diverse representation.
Looking Ahead
The APAC League aims to create a more inclusive and competitive environment. By consolidating the regional leagues into one robust competition, Riot Games is set to enhance the level of play and fan engagement across the Asia-Pacific region.
