Sony’s PlayStation 5 continues to play a major role in the company’s gaming plans, even as work on the PlayStation 6 moves ahead. Launched in 2020, the PS5 has already sold nearly 75 million units globally, despite early setbacks like the global chip shortage and the pandemic.
The console has become Sony’s fastest-selling system and has seen regular updates since its launch. In 2023, the company released the PS5 Slim, followed by the PS5 Pro in 2024. Both models offer improved performance and updated designs, showing Sony’s continued investment in the platform.
Now, with the next generation of PlayStation on the horizon, fans have been wondering how long the PS5 will continue to receive support. According to Sony, the PS5 will remain a key part of their gaming lineup even after the PS6 is released.
Hideaki Nishino, who leads the Platform Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, spoke about the PS5’s future during an interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu. He said the PS5 will follow a similar path as the PS4, which remained active and in production long after the PS5 came out.
Nishino explained that Sony’s approach is to balance innovation with long-term hardware support. He mentioned that the timeline for introducing new products depends on how quickly technology evolves and how ready Sony is to bring those updates to players.\
He also added that the PS5 was designed from the start to last for many years. From manufacturing to software support, every part of the console was made to ensure stable performance over time. Sony plans to keep growing its gaming ecosystem by offering both long-lasting consoles and exciting new upgrades.
