PlayStation’s handheld has just taken a massive leap forward. The PlayStation Portal, which once relied only on Remote Play to mirror your PS5, can now stream PS5 titles directly from the cloud. This means Premium subscribers can play blockbuster games like God of War Ragnarök, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Resident Evil 4 without even turning on their console at home.
The update, available starting November 6, marks a defining moment for the device since its 2023 launch, finally giving players the freedom to enjoy console-quality experiences anywhere with a strong Wi-Fi connection.
Cloud Gaming Comes To PlayStation Portal

With this rollout, thousands of PS5 titles are now playable directly from the cloud, provided you have a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. The new system allows players to stream digital titles from their library or the PlayStation Plus Catalog on the go. Whether lounging on the couch, studying on campus, or sitting in a café, you can now pick up your Portal and dive right into high-end PlayStation experiences.
A newly designed interface also makes things smoother, with three main tabs — Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search — making it easy to switch between modes.
New Features And Upgrades
Sony has gone beyond just cloud access with this update. The PlayStation Portal now supports immersive 3D Audio when paired with Pulse Explore earbuds or the Pulse Elite wireless headset, bringing console-level sound to your handheld experience.
You can also make in-game purchases during cloud sessions, track your internet quality through a new Network Status panel, and even lock your device with a passcode for added safety. Sony has also introduced accessibility improvements like adjustable text size and screen reader support, ensuring a more inclusive gaming experience.
To top it off, you can now receive and accept multiplayer invites while cloud streaming, allowing you to join friends instantly without needing your PS5 powered on.
The Handheld Reinvented
When the PlayStation Portal was first launched, critics questioned its purpose. Many felt its dependency on the PS5 made it more of an accessory than a true handheld. But this update changes everything. The Portal now feels like a proper portable PlayStation, bridging the gap between home consoles and on-the-go gaming.
While it may not be the return of the beloved PlayStation Vita, it certainly represents the next step in Sony’s handheld evolution — one that blends powerful cloud technology with the freedom of portable play.
