IO Interactive has officially confirmed the title of its highly anticipated James Bond video game. Previously known under the working title Project 007, the game will now be called 007: First Light, and fans can expect the full reveal later this week.
Set to debut during the video game industry's busy Summer Game Fest window, First Light is described as a completely original Bond origin story. According to the game's official website, players will step into the shoes of a young James Bond and follow his journey to earning the elite 00 status. This is not an adaptation of any film but a unique narrative crafted specifically for the game, offering a fresh take on the iconic character.
So far, the only platform officially confirmed for 007: First Light is the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The game briefly appeared during the recent Switch 2 Direct event, joining a strong lineup of third party titles that includes Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, and Street Fighter 6. Several Nintendo exclusives were also showcased, such as Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and Kirby Air Riders.
What makes First Light particularly exciting is IO Interactive's ambition. CEO Hakan Abrak previously revealed that this game is intended to launch a full trilogy. He emphasized that the studio was given creative freedom to tell an original story, free from the constraints of adapting a movie. This approach echoes IO’s success with the Hitman franchise, where they revitalized the stealth genre with storytelling depth and dynamic gameplay.
While the game is yet to be confirmed as part of the Summer Game Fest Live show on June 6, all signs point toward its official unveiling happening very soon. The event begins at 2 PM PT and promises appearances from major developers, including a tease from Kojima Productions and a mysterious horror title called Ill.
007: First Light represents a new era for James Bond in gaming, and if IO Interactive's track record is any indication, fans are in for something stylish, action packed, and unforgettable.
