Radiation poisoning is one of the most serious threats you will face in The Alters. Whether it hits you during late night exploration, near enriched metal zones, or while you are just passing too close to an anomaly, the danger is always present. If Jan or any of the Alters are affected, you need to act quickly to avoid long term damage or worse.
The first step in curing radiation poisoning is to return to base as soon as possible. Simply being inside the base with the radiation barrier turned on will gradually reduce exposure over time. But when the situation becomes critical, that is not enough. That is when the Infirmary becomes essential. Once built, it allows you to place the afflicted character in a specialized bed that accelerates the healing process. Be aware that using the Infirmary comes with a cost. The character placed in recovery will wake up much later than others, potentially delaying important tasks.
If someone suddenly starts suffering from radiation with no clear reason, check the machinery room immediately. This usually means the barrier was left off or the radiation filter ran out. Keeping the barrier running at all times is your first line of defense. You can craft filters using materials from your workshop and even set the barrier to automatically swap in fresh ones when needed. This feature helps you avoid the hassle of manual filter changes and ensures continuous protection.
Timing is everything in The Alters. Radiation poisoning tends to strike after the nightly radiation curfew. If you are outside when the warning appears, you only have a minute to return to base. Some contaminated zones on the map are always dangerous, especially areas with enriched metals. These places are marked in yellow and should be approached with caution.
You can also suffer radiation from anomalies. These strange, glowing distortions are dangerous, and direct contact with them will rapidly increase exposure. The best strategy is to turn away immediately and head back to safety. As the game progresses, radiation becomes more aggressive and appears earlier in the day, meaning you will need to shorten outside tasks and plan more carefully.
Magnetic storms are another major challenge linked to radiation. Once the Luminator device is unlocked in Act 1, storms become a regular part of the environment. During a storm, Jan and the Alters must stay inside the base. But this downtime does not have to be wasted. Use it to repair your equipment, craft new filters, or simply rest until the storm passes. Unlocking Magnetic Storm Analysis will allow you to predict these storms in advance, giving you time to gather supplies and secure your team.
To protect your crew long term, invest in upgrades like Radiation Repulsors and better suits. These improvements will strengthen your base and reduce how often you need to use radiation filters. Repulsors require more resources to build, but they are worth it in the long run, especially when preparing for longer missions outside.
Staying alive in The Alters means staying prepared. Keep your filters stocked, manage your base systems wisely, and never ignore a radiation warning. Mastering these survival tactics will keep Jan and the Alters healthy as they continue their journey.
