Microsoft has notified Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers about an upcoming price increase. Starting September 12, the subscription will see a $3 price hike, with renewal costing $19.99 plus applicable taxes.

Official Announcement

Microsoft's email to subscribers stated: “Thank you for being an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member. We are planning to update our prices so that we may continue to bring you more value and great games for the very best gaming experience. Starting September 12, 2024, you will be charged USD 19.99 plus applicable taxes every renewal period. You can manage your subscription, how you pay, or cancel your subscription by visiting your Microsoft Account.”

Details of the Price Hike

This price hike affects only existing subscribers. New subscribers will be subject to the revised rate immediately. In India, the current Game Pass Ultimate subscription costs Rs 549 per month, but will increase to Rs 829 per month following the adjustment.

Analyst Insights

An analyst recently told IGN India that the price hike was inevitable. Xbox's Game Pass modifications reflect a financial reality many subscription services face amid inflation, declining customer uptake, and the need for continuous growth. Last year, Microsoft increased the price for the Game Pass Ultimate from Rs 499 to Rs 549.

Changes to Subscription Plans

In addition to the price change, Microsoft has cancelled the Game Pass for Console plan and introduced a new Xbox Game Pass Standard plan, which will not include new games from the day of their debut.

New Features and Services

Microsoft recently launched the Xbox TV App on Amazon Fire Stick models, allowing users to play games directly on their TV via cloud gaming. To access the latest Xbox Game Pass titles, users will need a compatible Fire TV Stick, an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, and a Bluetooth-enabled wireless controller.

Conclusion

The price hike for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is a significant update for subscribers. Microsoft's decision reflects the broader trends in the subscription service market. Despite the increase, the company continues to enhance its offerings, such as the introduction of the Xbox TV App, ensuring that subscribers still receive great value and an immersive gaming experience.
