In Elden Ring Nightreign, storytelling takes a more personal and cinematic turn compared to the original game. Instead of relying solely on cryptic lore and obscure item descriptions, this expansion brings character driven stories to the forefront through Remembrances and Journal entries. One of the most emotionally impactful arcs belongs to Guardian, a Pinionfolk struggling with the weight of his past. Completing his Remembrances not only uncovers a touching backstory but also unlocks powerful Rites, Relics, and gear that enrich the experience both narratively and mechanically.
To begin Guardian’s story, players must unlock his Remembrances by progressing through the game and collecting Memory Fragments. These fragments aren’t physical items you pick up but are instead triggered automatically when key events occur, such as defeating bosses or completing expeditions. Once unlocked, they reveal new Journal entries and open up unique character missions that build toward a larger emotional payoff.
The first Remembrance starts when you speak to Iron Menial at the Roundtable Hold. This leads you to a distant area in Limveld, where a lone Golem waits. It’s a tough opponent that teleports if it strays too far from its zone, so timing and persistence matter. Once defeated, you receive the Stone Stake. Returning it to Iron Menial marks the completion of this stage.
The second Remembrance unfolds entirely within the Roundtable Hold. After receiving an Eerie Charm from the Spectral Merchant, Guardian faints from dizziness. When he regains consciousness, the story takes a dramatic turn, and players must confront and eliminate the Spectral Merchant to protect Guardian’s current flock. While this decision is presented as a choice, it is part of a fixed narrative path.
The third part of the journey sends players back to Limveld to meet the Demon Merchant, who offers a rare item called the Cursed Volume in exchange for a significant number of Runes. Once obtained, returning to the Roundtable and talking to Iron Menial again completes this chapter. It is worth noting that the volume remains in your inventory even if the expedition fails, but abandoning the run entirely will result in losing your progress.
The final Remembrance is where the narrative reaches its emotional climax. It begins with a letter from a character named Revenant and leads you to a hidden interaction in the study near the garden. There, you encounter Recluse, who reveals a shocking truth about cursing Guardian’s former flock. She gives you a Witch’s Brooch, and while you are given the illusion of choice, Guardian ultimately chooses to forgive her to protect the new lives in his care.
After completing all four Remembrances, players are rewarded with an extended and exclusive scene during the final boss battle. This moment not only enhances Guardian’s storyline but also adds depth and emotional gravity to the ending of Nightreign. It is a masterclass in character writing and proof of how far Elden Ring has come in balancing gameplay with emotional storytelling.
Guardian’s arc is more than a series of quests. It is a journey of guilt, redemption, and the burden of leadership, told with poignancy and power.
