Deltarune, the latest release from creator Toby Fox, officially dropped on June 4, 2025, and fans of indie RPGs have jumped in headfirst. If you’ve heard of Deltarune but never played the critically acclaimed Undertale, you might be wondering if you can still enjoy this new title without knowing the backstory. The short answer is yes. You absolutely can.

Deltarune is set in a universe that shares visual and character elements with Undertale, but it tells a completely separate story. You do not need to know anything about the original game to get immersed in Deltarune’s world. It introduces a new narrative, a different system of choices, and an updated combat style that blends turn based attacks with bullet dodging mechanics.

Though some familiar characters appear, such as Toriel, Sans, and Alphys, they are written into new roles that fit Deltarune’s storyline. That means newcomers will not feel out of place or confused. These characters are treated as fresh personalities, so your first introduction to them can be through Deltarune itself.

The game shines with its witty dialogue, pixel art charm, and unforgettable soundtrack. The emotional depth and surprise twists make it engaging from the very first chapter. And with Chapters 1 to 4 already available, players have a solid foundation to explore before the final three chapters roll out in future updates.

Playing Undertale beforehand can add some extra appreciation for inside jokes and references, but it is far from essential. Deltarune is built to stand on its own. In fact, for many, it might even serve as a gateway to eventually exploring Undertale later.

So if you’re new to Toby Fox’s world and curious about what makes his games so beloved, Deltarune is a perfect place to start.
