Square Enix has announced plans to use generative AI to automate 70 percent of its QA testing by 2027, citing cost efficiency and faster development. However, this decision has sparked industry-wide criticism, most notably from Baldur’s Gate 3’s Michael Douse.
QA is not an inherently entry-level job but I will also add that without gateways to the industry you won't find your lead designers. This is a stupid path. You want to be able to offer people beneficial positions that allow them to grow and help to grow you!

The Backlash
Douse argued that QA testers are vital to creative feedback and team culture, describing the move as “short-sighted and stupid.” He stressed that QA workers act as the first line of quality control and often transition into design roles that shape the future of game development.
The desired annual savings of $19.6 million - while a substantial amount of money in real life terms - is not hugely substantial for a AAA company. If things are this bad where are the executive "layoffs?" I'm pretty sure these games aren't failing because of QA, publishing, etc. https://t.co/MCJw16kBHz

Square Enix’s Justification
The Japanese publisher claims that AI will cut costs by 19 million dollars and increase efficiency through a new partnership with the University of Tokyo. Yet reports indicate mass layoffs across its QA departments, raising ethical and creative concerns within the industry.
As the debate over AI’s role in gaming continues, developers fear that replacing human judgment with algorithms could erode the art and emotion that define video games.
