Two premier Super Smash Bros events ended November 9 with standout victories for Duncan “SDJ” Meara in Melee and Carlos “Sonix” Pérez in Ultimate. Together they highlighted a competitive scene that remains vibrant on both sides of the Atlantic.

SDJ Dominates FAST FALL$

In Houston, SDJ defeated Spain’s Álvaro “Trif” García Moral 3-2 in a Peach vs Jigglypuff final to win the Melee singles title, adding a doubles trophy alongside Aly “MOF” Oquendo. “This is probably my best tournament win ever,” SDJ shared on X. Both players now advance to the Nounsvitational Tokyo 2025, a global Melee invitational later this year.

Sonix Claims Port Priority 9

Across the Pacific Northwest, Sonix won Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s Port Priority 9 in Seattle, beating Salvatore “Zomba” DeSena in the Grand Final. The Dominican star earned $2,619 for his win, ahead of Japan’s Carmelo and Shopify Rebellion’s Light. “I won Port Priority 9 and I’m so content with my performance,” Sonix wrote after ending his series of second-place finishes.

Upsets and Highlights

In one of the weekend’s biggest surprises, legendary player Leonardo “MkLeo” López Pérez fell early after losses to Yeast and rm8, finishing a disappointing 65th — his lowest major placement to date. Meanwhile, rising players from Japan and the US continued to expand the global meta with creative character picks.
