In the world of competitive gaming, Cinderella stories are rare, but what Yangon Galacticos achieved at the PUBG Mobile World Cup 2025 is the stuff of legends. Coming from a country shaken by political unrest and a devastating earthquake just months earlier, Myanmar’s lone representatives stunned the world by taking down Chinese powerhouse Weibo Gaming to claim the ultimate prize. For a team that entered the event as underdogs and barely scraped into the finals, the journey to the top is nothing short of extraordinary.

The team’s leader, Swan “Smile” Wint Maung, is no stranger to adversity. Growing up in Myanmar, he would travel to gaming cafes because he didn’t have a PC at home. His love for shooters began with Counter-Strike, but PUBG Mobile’s blend of shooting and survival gameplay captured his heart. In the early days, Smile played on a mid-range smartphone, battling both technical disadvantages and the fierce competition of the SEA region, one of the most competitive zones in PUBG Mobile esports. Tournament victories allowed him to upgrade his gear, but nothing could prepare him for the disaster that struck earlier this year.

On March 28, 2025, a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, the most powerful in over a century. Over 3,300 lives were lost, with thousands more injured. The epicentre was near Mandalay, but the tremors shook Yangon, where the Galacticos were competing in the PUBG Mobile Regional Clash. Playing while fearing for their safety was a surreal and terrifying experience, yet the team managed to win the event the very next day. That victory carried them into the PUBG Mobile Challengers League, the only gateway to the World Cup.

Qualifying was no easy task. The Galacticos had to beat fellow Burmese representatives, the Burmese Ghouls, to claim the sole spot. When they finally reached Riyadh for the PMWC, expectations were modest. Smile admitted they were aiming for a top 5 or top 10 finish at best. Reality struck hard when they placed 11th in the group stage, forcing them into the Survival Stage, where they barely made it through as the last seed.

What happened next defied all predictions. In the grand finals, the Galacticos began to find their rhythm. Consistent performances and fearless plays brought them within striking distance of the leaders. It was on the final day, particularly during the fifth game, that Smile began to believe they could actually win it all. And win they did, edging out Weibo Gaming in the overall standings, silencing doubters, and igniting celebrations back home.

The secret, Smile revealed, was not just skill or strategy, but brotherhood. “The four of us are like a family. That bond is what sets us apart,” he said. This unity proved to be their greatest weapon on the battlefield, allowing them to stay calm under pressure and adapt quickly.

When they returned to Myanmar, they were met with a hero’s welcome that few could have imagined. Thousands gathered at the airport to celebrate their champions, a scene usually reserved for the biggest sports victories. For Smile, the moment was surreal. “We had seen other teams celebrated like this in the Middle East and wished for it, but we never thought it would happen for us. Yet here we were, welcomed like heroes.”

The victory carries enormous significance for Myanmar’s esports scene. It will likely draw new sponsors, inspire young players, and challenge traditional mindsets in a country where gaming is often discouraged by parents. The Galacticos also earned over $540,000 in prize money, but for Smile, the real reward is personal. “I just want my parents to have a good life. That’s all I want to use the money for,” he said.

The team now sets its sights on the PUBG Mobile Global Championship later this year. If their PMWC 2025 journey is anything to go by, no one should underestimate them again.
