The Esports Federation of India (ESFI) has expressed strong support for the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to collaborate with the National Olympic Committee of Saudi Arabia to host the inaugural Olympic Esports Games in 2025. This landmark event will take place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Historic Announcement

On July 12, the IOC confirmed plans for the Olympic Esports Games, following the IOC Executive Board's earlier announcement about establishing a standalone multinational event. The proposal for the Olympic Esports Games will be officially presented at the upcoming IOC session before the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Significance of the Decision

Lokesh Suji, Director of ESFI and Vice President of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF), hailed the decision as a monumental step for global esports. He stated, “This decision marks a significant milestone in the global recognition and growth of esports, providing a prestigious platform for athletes from around the world to showcase their skills on an unparalleled stage. Finally, esports at the Olympics—this is the news we have all been waiting for. We thank the leadership and the entire IOC for transforming our dreams into reality.”

Lokesh further emphasized the importance of this development, saying, “Last year it was Asian Games (where our League of Legends team placed 5th), this year it's Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, and next year Esports Olympic Games—exciting times ahead. We are thrilled to see esports being embraced by the Olympic movement, reflecting the immense dedication, talent, and passion of the global gaming community. This development not only elevates the status of esports but also paves the way for greater opportunities and support for players and enthusiasts in India and beyond.”

Long-Term Partnership and Vision 2030

The partnership between the IOC and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia NOC will span 12 years, according to their current agreement. This collaboration includes hosting the Olympic Esports Games regularly. The event aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, an ambitious plan led by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman to diversify the country's economy, society, and culture.

Vision 2030 and Esports Integration

The Olympic Esports Games will be a significant chapter in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, aiming for greater economic, social, and cultural diversification. This integration of esports into such a prominent national vision underscores the global growth and acceptance of competitive gaming.
