One of North America’s most iconic esports organizations has made a move that few fans thought they would ever witness. Complexity has announced its exit from Counter-Strike 2, effectively bringing to an end its two-decade-long journey in one of the most competitive esports arenas. The shocking news was delivered by Founder and CEO Jason Lake in a heartfelt video message released on August 19, 2025.
A Legacy Cut Short
Since acquiring its first roster in 2004, Complexity has been a permanent fixture in the Counter-Strike scene. Across nearly 24 years, the Dallas-based organization built a reputation for consistency, resilience, and historic victories at major tournaments. From thrilling rivalries on the global stage to lifting trophies that defined eras, Complexity was a name that embodied the North American spirit in Counter-Strike esports.
But that proud legacy is now coming to an abrupt halt. Lake explained that while 2023 and 2024 were strong years, 2025 has proven to be an incredibly difficult period for the esports economy. The financial strain, he admitted, made it impossible to keep investing in a roster capable of competing at the highest level.
A Painful Yet Principled Decision
In his announcement, Lake emphasized that the decision was not made lightly. The organization explored every possible option to secure investment and revenue streams, but the numbers simply did not add up. Rather than dragging things out and risking the wellbeing of players and staff, Complexity chose to step away with dignity.
“We could have tried to push through for a little longer,” Lake said, “but doing right by our players and staff means knowing when to stop. This was the right thing to do.”
The departure coincides with four of Complexity’s players transferring to Passion UA, the Ukrainian organization owned by football star Oleksandr Zinchenko. This move marks a reunion with long-time coach T.c and veteran in-game leader Johnny ‘JT’ Theodosiou, preserving a sense of continuity for the roster even as Complexity bows out.
The Harsh Reality of Esports Economics
Lake was candid about the economic challenges behind the decision. “We turned over every rock, we tried everything we could, but the environment has been incredibly difficult,” he explained. Acknowledging the disappointment this would bring to fans, he took personal responsibility, even apologizing for what he described as falling short of expectations.
Despite the exit, Complexity will honor its current commitments, including participation in the PrizePicks Revival Series, maintaining at least some presence in the Counter-Strike community before fully stepping away.
What Comes Next
When asked if Complexity could return to Counter-Strike in the future, Lake admitted that no immediate plans are in place. Any comeback would depend on major improvements to the esports economy. For now, the decision signals the end of an era.
The departure not only affects Complexity but also resonates across the broader Counter-Strike community. For many, Complexity was more than just a team. It was a symbol of North America’s potential to compete at the highest level in one of esports’ most enduring titles.
As Lake put it in his emotional message: “Leaving Counter-Strike is hard for our organization, for our players, and for me personally. But sometimes, that is just the way it goes.”
For longtime fans, this exit marks a bittersweet farewell to a chapter of esports history. Complexity leaves behind a legacy defined by grit, perseverance, and moments that shaped Counter-Strike for more than two decades.
