William Mezii Merriman has just entered uncharted territory. The British Counter-Strike star from Team Vitality is now the first esports player in the world to receive a personalised hashtag on X. This moment marks a cultural shift, placing esports athletes right next to global celebrities in terms of online influence and fan engagement.
The custom tag was revealed on July 23 and includes not one but two unique hashtags. Whenever fans post #kingmezii or #mEZii on X, a yellow and black crown logo appears next to the tag. The graphic features a bold M with a crown above it, perfectly capturing Mezii’s recent dominance in the competitive scene.
This social media milestone is just the latest highlight in what has been an extraordinary year for Mezii. In June, he became the first UK player to win a Counter-Strike Major after Team Vitality’s triumph at the BLAST.tv Austin Major. That victory kicked off an unbeaten streak that has lasted since February, including wins at IEM Dallas, BLAST Open Spring, and ESL Pro League Season 21.
Mezii is also climbing the earnings leaderboard. With over nine hundred thousand dollars in prize money, he is now the second most successful esports player from the UK. Only Jaden Wolfiez Ashman, who shot to fame after the 2019 Fortnite World Cup, has earned more.
Looking ahead, Mezii is preparing for IEM Cologne 2025. Team Vitality enters the tournament as the number one ranked team in the world and a clear favourite to take home another championship. A win in Cologne would mark their ninth title of the year and further cement Mezii’s status as one of the greatest players to come out of the UK.
To add more fuel to the fire, Mezii has teased a major announcement coming on July 25. With momentum, media presence, and fan support all in his corner, the reveal could be another first that sets the bar for esports culture.
